SCORING
Each week, your 11 active athletes will accumulate points based on their performance in real NFL games. Your total points will then be compared to the total points earned by your opponent's 11 active athletes. The team with the most points wins that week's game.
We determine precisely how many points each fantasy team has earned for the week in the following manner. After all fantasy point calculations have been performed for a team, any remaining fractions of a point are dropped from the team's total score for the week. If, after dropping any fraction from each team's score, both teams have identical point totals for the week, the game will be considered a tie and will be shown as such in the league standings.
Three basic goals govern the point system for STATS Fantasy Football: statistical realism, simplicity, and team realism. We want all parts of a football game that significantly contribute to a win or a loss to be represented by a value.
Scoring a TD or stopping a TD is the essence of football, and it's the essence of SFF. Thus, TDs carry the most value.
A player from any position can be your highest point earner for the week, but QBs average the most points over the course of the season. The Top RBs are next most valuable, with WRs close behind. The Defenses match the running back and receiver categories in strength. But the Overall Defense can be as valuable or more valuable than your QB in any week. The Kicker and Coach give steady points.

Offensive Points
Your offensive athletes can earn points in any of the offensive categories. If your receiver throws the ball, he receives passing points. If your quarterback catches an 80-yard pass, he gets the receiving points. The lone exception to this rule is kicking: only your Kicker can get kicking points, and he can receive no other types of offensive points. Beware: offensive athletes can end up with negative point totals for the week.
- Touchdowns
- 12 points every time your offensive player scores a TD, either passing, running, receiving, or returning.
- Passing
- 1 point for every 10 yards passing.
- 2 points per completion MINUS 1 point per attempt. There are negative points here if you're under 50 percent.
Example:
Peyton Manning goes 25-38. That’s 2 x 25 = 50 points for completions, MINUS 38 attempts = 12 total points.
Example:
Cade McNown goes 10-30. That’s 2 x 10 = 20 points for completions, MINUS 30 attempts= -10 points.
- 6 points are SUBTRACTED per interception thrown.
- You get one bonus point for every 5 yards passing beyond 300 yards.
- Rushing
- 1 point for every three yards rushing MINUS 1 point for every two attempts.
- If your player runs for over 100 yards, you get a bonus! For every 5 yards rushed over 100, you get 1 point added to your total score.
- Receiving
- 1 point for every five yards receiving.
- 1.5 points per pass reception.
- If your player catches passes for over 100 yards, you get a bonus! For every 5 yards receiving over 100, you get 1 point.
Example:
Keyshawn Johnson’s receptions total 160 yards. He gets 160 divided by 5 = 32 regular points. To figure the bonus, start with 60 yards-over-100 divided by 5 = 12. Since he receives 1 point for every 5 yards for his bonus, his total bonus points are 12. The regular 32 points plus the 12 bonus = 44 total points.
- Fumbles
- 6 points are subtracted for each fumble lost by your player.
- Two-point Conversions
- A Quarterback, Running Back, or Receiver gets 4 points if he passes, runs, or receives for a two-point conversion.
- Kicking
- 2 points are awarded for an extra point.
- 6 points are awarded for a 1-39 yd FG.
- 9 points are awarded for a 40-49 yd FG.
- 12 points are awarded for a 50+ yd FG.
- 2 points are subtracted for a missed extra point.
- 6 points are subtracted for a missed FG from less than 40 yards. No points are subtracted for missed FG longer than 40 yards.
- Coach
- This is pretty simple. You have one active coach. If his NFL team wins, you get 20 points. If his team beats a divisional opponent, you get 5 bonus points, for a point total of 25 for the week. If his NFL team loses or ties, you get zero points. If your coach gets fired or quits, you will have to activate your other coach. If you decide to keep your fired coach active for sentimental reasons, you'll get zero points.
- Overall Offensive Bonuses
- 5 points are added to a player's total TD score for each touchdown pass, catch or run (but not a return) of 50 yards or more.
Defensive Points
There are three defensive units that can earn points: Overall Defense, Rushing Defense, and Passing Defense. Each owner's defenses often will be from different NFL teams (i.e. you can have the Overall Defense of Denver, the Rush Defense of Tampa Bay and the Pass Defense of Green Bay).
- Overall Defense
- Points Allowed
- An Overall Defense gets 3 fantasy points for each real NFL point not allowed under 28 points.
Example:
Your Overall Defense is Chicago. They allow Green Bay to score 34 points. They consequently earn zero points because they allowed 28 or more real points.
Example:
Your Overall Defense is Miami, and they allow New England to score 24 points. Your OD would receive 12 fantasy points (28 minus 24 = 4 real points not allowed under 28, times 3 fantasy points = 12).
- For SFF purposes, your Overall Defense is considered to have allowed real points only if they were the result of field goals, rushing or passing/receiving touchdowns, or associated extra points and two-point conversions. The defense must have been on the field when the TD was scored.
Example:
You have the Chicago Overall Defense. The Chicago QB throws an interception that's returned for a TD. For SFF purposes, the Chicago Overall Defense did not allow those points.
- Defensive Stops
- Your Overall Defense gets 2 points every time it stops the offense by forcing a punt or turnover (fumble, interception, or on downs). For the sake of simplicity, if a fumble or interception occurs on a failed fourth down attempt, your OD will receive credit for two stops. This will allow you to accurately calculate from a box score the points earned by your OD for defensive stops. The team statistics section of a standard box score shows each team's punts, fumbles lost, interceptions, and failed fourth down attempts.
Example:
Your Green Bay Overall Defense forces the Chicago offense to punt five times, lose one fumble, throw two interceptions, and lose the ball on downs once. The Green Bay Overall Defense would receive two points for each of these nine "stops", for a total of 18 points.
- Safeties
- Your Overall Defense will receive 4 points for each safety it records.
- Special Team TDs
- Your OD will receive 12 points for each touchdown scored by its special teams.
- Rushing Defense
- Yards Allowed
- A Rushing Defense gets 1 point for every two yards rushing allowed UNDER 140 yards
- 1 point will be subtracted for every two yards rushing allowed over 140 yards.
Example:
Your Rushing Defense is San Diego. They allow 60 yards rushing against Seattle. 140 minus 60 equals 80 yards not allowed divided by 2 = 40 points.
- Points Allowed
- For every rushing TD allowed by your Rushing Defense, you lose 12 points.
- If your Rushing Defense allows no rushing TDs and 70 or fewer rushing yards, you get a bonus of 10 points.
- Fumbles Recovered and Returned
- 6 points are awarded for every fumble recovered by your Rushing Defense.
- 12 points are awarded for a TD scored by your RD on a fumble return.
- Total
- If, after adding your RD's points in all of the above categories, the total is less than zero, your RD will be credited with zero points. It cannot earn less than zero points.
- Passing Defense
- Yards Allowed
- A Passing Defense gets 1 point for every four passing yards allowed UNDER 280 yards. 1 point will be subtracted for every 4 yards passing allowed OVER 280 yards.
Example:
You have the Chicago Pass Defense. They allow 144 yards passing against Detroit. 280 minus 144 equals 136, divided by 4 equals 34 points.
- Points Allowed
- For every passing touchdown allowed by your Pass Defense, you lose 12 points.
- If your pass defense allows no passing TDs and 140 or fewer passing yards, you get a bonus of 10 points.
- Interceptions and Returns
- Six (6) points are awarded for every interception made by the Pass Defense.
- 12 points are awarded for a TD scored by your Pass Defense on an interception return.
- Sacks
- 3 points are awarded for each sack recorded by your Pass Defense.
- Total
- If, after totaling your Passing Defense's points in all of the above categories, the total is less than zero, your Passing Defense will be credited with zero points for the week. It may not earn less than zero points for the week.
